A great saying “A children’s book illustration that does not complement a story, in the end, will become but a false idol. Since we cannot possibly believe in an absent story, we will naturally begin believing in the picture itself.”

Here I have listed down the 5 essential things for children’s book illustration. So let’s get started.

1. Pictures depicting words:

A picture can speak thousands of words. A picture that tells a story is a great approach for young children to make them learn new things. These can make books fun, entertaining and help children to develop a love for books. It helps children to strengthen their critical and visual thinking skills. Young kids are not that fond of reading so conveying the importance of books through pictures is a great way.

2. Choice of Colour:

The Colour is an Important aspect of pictures. It enhances the meaning, improves object recognition, conveys structure, establishes identity, improves usability, communicates mood, express metaphors. They show the real things one can relate. Every character has some colours and every colour depicts some emotions, so using the right colour for right characters is mandatory. Colours should re-enforce the message and mood of the picture.

3. Character development:

The characters are something which kids directly relate to themselves. So developing a character that is appealing and reflective of the story is important. The character has to feel like they belong to them.Every aspect of your narration has to make sense. Crafting a believable character is imperative for the success of any children’s book.

4. Illustrate the story:

There is a huge difference between creating a picture and narrating an illustration. A good illustration brings the story alive. Without the story, illustration is meaningless. For illustrating a story, the illustrator needs to read the story and understand it so that he/she can illustrate the story with full justice.

5. See from children’s perspective:

You cannot make a successful children’s book illustration if you don’t think from their perspective. Understanding of your audience and their needs is necessary to be a good illustrator. Illustrating something which is easy to grasp but effective for children’s is a must.
