RUTHERFORDTON—The Rutherford County Visual Arts Center is once again hosting summer art camps for youth. This year, there are two different camps, one focused on mixed media, and, for the first time, a pottery camp.

At the mixed media camp, kids will learn two different kinds of painting techniques, jewelry making, and be exposed to pottery making. There will be four different activities on the first four days. On the last day, participants will present an art show when families and friends can see all the creations.

The mixed media art camp has two sessions. July 11-15, 9 a.m.-Noon is for ages 6-11. The July 18-22, 9 a.m. – noon session is for youth ages 12-17.

The cost for each of these camps is $145 per child.

Pottery Camp will be June 20-23 (Monday through Thursday), and Thursday, July 7. The morning session (9 a.m.-noon) will be for ages 6-11; while the afternoon session (1-4 p.m.) will be for those age 12-17.

At this pottery-focused camp, kids will be making the pottery on four days, and one day will be for glazing their pieces. Organizers say this camp will be fun for beginners, and teach new techniques to experienced potters.

Pieces will dry and be bisque fired before they are glazed. Participants will be able to pick up their pottery the first week of July.

The total cost of the pottery-focused camp is $235. ($185 for instruction, $50 for materials).

Deborah Harmon of the Visual Arts Guild says the organization is focused on reaching out to youth.

“We are reaching out schools and community groups to encourage young people to enter their work in the 2022 Celebration of the Arts, a juried art show scheduled for Sept. 23-28 a the Foundation, on the campus of Isothermal Community College,” Harmon said.

The show is free to enter, and cash and ribbon prizes will be awarded.

“We want to inspire in our youth, a love of art,” Harmon said. “Participating in art camp could open their eyes to new discovery. They may find joy in creating.”
